In a significant diplomatic gathering, the foreign ministers of the United States, France, and Turkey, alongside counterparts from eight Arab nations, convened this Saturday in Aqaba, Jordan. The meeting aims to discuss the future of Syria following the rise of jihadist rebel factions that have further complicated an already tumultuous landscape. This summit, called by Jordanian King Abdullah II, seeks to forge a path toward a peaceful and inclusive political transition in Syria.

Among the attendees are U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Notably, Turkey has been a supporter of the coalition led by the self-proclaimed jihadist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has its roots in Al-Qaeda. This raises critical questions about the motivations behind such international support for groups that have historically contributed to instability and violence in the region.
The meeting also includes representatives from the European Union and the UN envoy for Arab countries, emphasizing a collective effort to address Syria’s dire situation. The newly formed Liaison Committee on Syria—comprising Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Egypt—will discuss current conditions and future prospects for political transition.
The participating nations have reportedly “unified their positions” to establish a comprehensive transitional government primarily mediated by the United Nations and the Arab League. They have called for drafting a new constitution and holding “free” elections while condemning Israel’s military incursions into the demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria as well as its airstrikes against Syrian military bases and weapon depots.
This gathering reflects an ongoing trend where imperial powers seek to exert influence over sovereign nations under the guise of promoting democracy and stability. However, it is crucial to scrutinize who truly benefits from these interventions. The involvement of countries like Turkey—supporting extremist factions—raises alarms about genuine intentions behind these diplomatic efforts.
As Latin American progressives observe these developments, it is essential to recognize that true sovereignty cannot be achieved through external imposition or manipulation. The Syrian people deserve an opportunity to determine their own future without foreign interference or support for extremist elements that undermine peace.
